In its heyday, this was the centre of a substantial organisation with almost 100,000 officials and servants. This temple is flat in design, with a basic plan of successive rectangular galleries around a Buddhist sanctuary complicated by Hindu satellite temples and numerous later additions. With numerous trees and other vegetablw growing among the ruins, Preah Khan Temple has been left largely unrestored.
Bakheng Mount Temple
Phnom Bakheng was constructed more than two centuries before the Angkor Wat. It is a Hindu temple originally built in the form of a temple mountain dedicated to Shiva. Historians believe that Bakheng Mount was in its heyday, the principal temple of the Angkor region. It was the architectural centerpiece of a new capital that Yasovarman built when he moved the court from the capital Hariharalaya in the Roluos area located in the southeast.
Located atop a hill, this is the most popular tourist spot for sunset views of the much bigger Angkor Wat temple which stretches amid the jungle about 1.5 km away

Ta Som Temple
Ta Som Temple was a Buddhism Temple which constructed by Jayavaraman VII (1181-1220) in order to honor of his older sister, at the end of 12th Century. As sister was not so important as parents, that is why her temple shrine is a small one. Besides, Ta Som is the one of the three temples constructed by King Jayavarman VII, which associated in an axis running across Baray Jayatataka. Those three temple include Preah Khan (dedicated to his father) which located to the western side of the lake, Neak Pean ( baptism Temple) is standing in middle, while Ta Som itself is located on the Eastern side of the lake.
Although, Ta Som is considering as a small temple site in the grand circuit group, but it is interesting to visit its site. The most highlight motifs of visit to Ta Som is the smiling faces of Avalokesvara sculptures on the entrance gateways, the Apsaras with a long hair and the rain forest surrounding the site as well.
About Apsaras of Ta Som temple hold their long hair to impress the public with parrot birds alighted on the lotus stents at around their necks. This idea was perhaps his own sister a lady got a long hair liked a Khmer legend of a tittle “a magic hair girl” with a sweet loves, because the parrots are the significant of romantic loves of Tati the wife of Kamashutra and the long hair is for Neang Sak Kra Oub or Neang Romsay Sak.
The East gate of Ta Som is also interesting to go and see, because on the top of this temple
still has a huge Bayan tree grows. On the other hands, about 40 years ago at the west gate used to have a huge Spung tree(Silk ad Cutton tree) grown with its roots came surrounding the tower faces, which made a most popular photograph taken by tourists, when the tree had died the Angkor Department decided to remove it away.
As the same as Banteay Kdei, Ta Som temple had never been restored by the French at all, they just removed the plantation away from its structure only. But today Ta Som is under the restoration and preservation project by the WMF (World Monuments Fund) a nonprofit organization based in New York USA.
Ta Som had added laterite to build its structure, since the noble material sandstone was running out and since the King wanted to finish faster, otherwise his other projects would not complete under his rign as we know Jayavarman VII was the big temples builder in the Angkor period.
During the war in 1970-1975, the Viet Cong took Ta Som temple compound for using as their own hospital an d their own military supplies storehouse, in order to protect themselves from general Lon Nol’s aircraft attacks. The Lon Nol government respected the ancient temple structure very much. Since General Lon Nol did not attack in the sites, then the Viet-Cong and the Khmer Rough look many temple compounds in Angkor area and somewhere else in in around Cambodia to serve as their heavens.
The another story is in 1963, a man living in Preah Dak village found four tiger babies in the chamber of the East gate. The tiger babies had been sold to a French who worked in the Angkor conservation departments, but the Mama tiger had killed because she went to the hunter’s house for her babies. Some chapters of the French movies of “Two Tiger Brothers” at the recent shot in Angkor was following this story as will.
Boeng Malea
Boeng Malea Temple was built by King Suryavarman II at the early of 12th century. Some say that King Suryavarman II built Boeng Mealea dedicated to his teacher (Guru). While he built Angkor Wat for honor of his God Vishnu. The location of Beng Mealea is about 60km to the Northeast of Siem Reap city, and also at the foot of Phnom Kulen Mount. Kulen Mount is a place of sandstone, and it was very convenient, and not difficult to move the stone to construct Beng Mealea temple celebration before the King had new project to build Angkor Wat as his own state temple.

Layout and plan of Boeng Mealea is very similar to Banteay Samer temple. Except Banteay Samre has more detail reliefs, but smaller. The size of Boeng Mealea temple structure is occupied about 200m from East to the West and 150m from the North to the South. Beng Mealea temple comprises three separate gallery and structures surrounding the central tower, and between those galleries structures there are extra longs and narrow buildings had been built. The function of those buildings was served as chambers for meditation. But unfortunately, so far the central tower had completely destroyed.
Boeng Mealea comprises four causeways which there is one on each side. But the distant of each causeways of Beng Mealea did not control exactly measurement unit. For example, Northern causeway measured of 250m long crossing river straight North, Eastern causeway where the temple’s main entrance is measured of 1000 meters long, southern causeway the one of very popular using as temple access today measured about 300 meters long, and the western causeway measured about 600m long.
However, at the moment the condition of Boeng Mealea is so ruined and poor. The causing spiritual temple construction so ruined and poor for about 80% had destroyed by Thais. When they invaded Angkor in the 14th century to the 15th century, during they controlled Angkor for almost 100 years. The Thais tried to destroy as much as they could, since they were so jealous Khmer people, they did not want Cambodia who the considered as their traditional enemy own those magnificent spiritual monuments at all. That is the reason that the ancient temples of Cambodia ancestors fallen apart, only about 20% that ruined by nature.
Since the Thais destroyed the temple and removed people in Angkor to their country for acting as their slave, then King Ponhea Yat gathering Khmer people to push the Thais away from Angkor. The Angkor had liberated but the Khmers had paid a lot of prices for the lost, then the King decided abandon the city of Angkor to an area near Phnom Penh today, after that jungle take ever and swallow the temples. Before he moved from Angkor, the King named a village near Angkor as “Siem Reap, Defeated of Siemese”.
When French arrived Angkor in 1860s, they saw densely jungle taken over temples and said that the temples had collapsed by the trees, as they did not think to the terrible conflict between Thais and Khmer people in the pass. Although, today most people still think the temple strutures are ruined by big tree or by the earhquake, by the termite mounts and by the artilery fighting so on.
Boeng Mealea is very interesting place to visit because the jungle is still governing the beauty over the temple structures and its compound, although the Apsara Authority has cut most of the trees. The chopping trees from the Boeng Mealea is not good idea, because of those trees are the beauty of the temple site. No tree no life for Boeng Mealea and no tourists to visit. We complaint the idea of removing the trees from Boeng Mealea temple, because trees are not the big enemy for the temples the enemy for the temples is men. Whole Angkor area, there are so man restoration temples already, why don’t we keep one for allow foreign visitors and our next generation to understand how Khmer temples were liked since Mr. Heri Mouhot the official discoverer saw when he arrived Angkor in 1860s.
